How Poor Posture Causes Pain

Chiropractors teach proper posture and provide adjustments to improve posture in an effort to avoid back and neck pain and other health issues caused by poor posture.

Can slouching while sitting and hunching over a computer cause back pain?

Dr. Scott Gardner: Yes. With the amount of time we spend with technology at work and home, this can cause pain if the person is not in the correct posture for an extended period of time.

How does poor posture cause neck pain?

Dr. Scott Gardner: Poor posture, especially a forward head posture where the head is out in front causes a tremendous amount of stress on the neck and upper back. It’s like holding a 10 pound weight in your hand close to you or moving it forward. The more you move the weight forward, the harder it is to hold and the more stress on the muscles. And that’s a similar process that happens when the head is forward causing excessive stress and strain on the muscles in the neck and upper back.

What other aches and pains and discomfort can be traced back to poor posture?

Dr. Scott Gardner: Poor posture can cause back pain, neck pain, upper back pain, shoulder pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, headaches, generalized fatigue, really just to name a few.

What can people do every day to maintain good posture?

Dr. Scott Gardner: There are several things people can do to maintain posture. Number one, make sure your workstation is set up correctly. Secondly, sleeping in the correct posture. So if you think about it, the two places we spend most of our time should be where we focus on maintaining ideal posture. Third, holding your phone or technology in a correct position. And four, getting under regular chiropractic care that focuses on creating and maintaining ideal posture.

Is it possible to correct the effects of poor posture and reduce the pain caused by it?

Dr. Scott Gardner: Definitely. We specialize in corrective care. The initial evaluation is focused on finding out what the person’s posture is and their spinal alignment. Then we create a program made up of specific chiropractic adjustments and posture building exercises.
