Pediatric Chiropractic

Pediatric chiropractic care helps children of all ages from infants to student athletes. Chiropractors check and make sure the spine is in alignment without any nerve interference to ensure proper growth and development.

In what ways do infants and toddlers benefit from gentle chiropractic care?

Dr. Scott Gardner: They can benefit by really making sure as they grow, they grow correctly. Because of the positioning in utero, that can really start the subluxation process, which is the misalignment of the bones, creating pressure on the nerves, leading to malfunction in the body. Also, as toddlers learn to walk, the amount of times that they fall can really contribute to the cause of subluxations as well.

Can a chiropractor help diagnose and treat a child with scoliosis?

Dr. Scott Gardner: Yes, scoliosis is so common and we have great success with it. We would do a physical exam first and if we suspect a scoliosis, then typically we do an x-ray to determine the severity. The key is really catching it as early as possible if we really want to be able to correct it.

Can you explain what text neck is and the health risks teenagers face from staring at their phones, sitting too much and not maintaining proper posture?

Dr. Scott Gardner: Text neck or technology neck is really reaching epidemic proportions. It occurs from a straightening of the neck as a result of forward head posture. You know, really just sitting and looking at technology, whether it’d be their phone, laptop, iPad or video games really leads to that forward head posture. This can cause things like neck pain, upper back pain, headaches, numbness in the hands and difficulty concentrating.

For student athletes, in what ways can a chiropractor prepare their growing bodies for peak athletic performance and also help rehabilitate any sports injuries?

Dr. Scott Gardner: One of my favorite sayings is structure determines function. When the spine is in the proper alignment, the nervous system will work at its optimal level. Really as a result, the body can then perform at its highest level and the person will then have a much greater ability to heal quicker from injuries. When Emmitt Smith broke Walter Payton’s all-time NFL rushing record, he said, “I want to thank God, my mom and my chiropractor.”  I think that pretty much sums it up.
