There are myths about chiropractic care that it is unsafe, expensive and only for adults among other falsehoods. It is important to dispel these myths with facts about the effectiveness, the benefits to overall health for the entire family and the affordability of chiropractic care.
Could you dispel the myth that chiropractic care is unsafe and dangerous?
Dr. Ben Rauch: Absolutely. Chiropractic care is extremely safe. I think that this myth maybe comes from people believing that chiropractic is a quick fix when in reality the goal of chiropractic is to remove subluxations and get better structure and function of the nervous system. Like any process where you’re changing and making change in the body, there can be soreness involved just like going to the gym, right? Quite often you have that soreness involved. And not everybody gets sore, but I think that might be where that myth is coming from or where that unsafe myth is coming from.
People think chiropractors only treat back pain. What are some other conditions chiropractors treat?
Dr. Ben Rauch: Chiropractors don’t actually treat back pain. What we do is we detect, assess, and correct those subluxations in the spine. And when we correct those subluxations, the function of that nervous system actually improves and the whole body starts to actually function better. So, a lot of the times when you think that it’s the back pain that’s necessarily going away, that’s just one of the side effects of having a better functioning nervous system.
There is a myth that chiropractic is only for adults. What should people know about the importance of chiropractic for all ages?
Dr. Ben Rauch: People of any age have a functioning nervous system and can also get those subluxations of the spine or that interference in their nervous system. When that happens, it decreases the function of their nervous system. So, anybody should be getting chiropractic care of any age if you want a better functioning nervous system.
Another myth is that other doctors do not trust chiropractors. Could you talk about the support and referrals you as a chiropractor have received from other medical professionals?
Dr. Ben Rauch: Definitely, Liz. As a chiropractor, I’ve often found that other medical professionals don’t necessarily understand what we do as chiropractors. Many times, just by having a conversation with them, it can be very easy to get them on board with what we do. At Gardner Family Chiropractic, we receive many referrals from all kinds of medical professionals, from orthopedic surgeons to dentists.
A big myth is that chiropractic is too expensive. How would you respond to people who don’t even consider chiropractic for fear of the cost?
Dr. Ben Rauch: Quite often we need to invest in our health. In our office, we see people from every kind of financial background. We always give them options in how they want to approach their care. And usually, it ends up with a more intensive care program that corrects the problem quickly, which can be more expensive upfront, or a care program that gets the same results just maybe over a longer period of time that extends that financial burden.
