Chiropractic care helps athletes return to their sport faster by reducing tension on the spine and nervous system which allows the body to function at its peak so it can heal and recover.
How does chiropractic care aid in an athlete’s overall sports recovery process?
Dr. Scott Gardner: Chiropractic aids in an athlete’s recovery by adjusting bones in the spine or extremities to reduce tension. This helps to improve movement in the joints. More importantly, chiropractic care directly affects the function of the nervous system. And we know the nervous system is a system that is responsible for recovery. This is why all professional sports teams, colleges, and even most of your bigger high schools have chiropractors on staff.
How does chiropractic care complement other recovery methods like physical therapy or massage therapy?
Dr. Scott Gardner: Chiropractic, physical therapy and massage therapy each offer benefits to athletes. I think of physical therapy for strengthening areas that are weak and stretching areas that are tight. I think massage therapy really for helping to relax stressed areas. And chiropractic for restoring normal alignment and creating ideal posture and a healthy nervous system.
As a chiropractor, what lifestyle advice, such as diet and nutrition, do you give athletes to support their recovery process?
Dr. Scott Gardner: So, I believe each individual has specific needs. There’s no one magic recipe. It really has to be personalized for each individual. But recovery and overall health comes down to several factors.
Nutrition, really making the right choices for each person when choosing the foods that they’re eating. Post-workout rehab, stretching, foam roller, ice, heat, rest, et cetera. Again, a little bit more on rest. That quality rest is vital because we really only can heal when we’re at rest.
And then as far as chiropractic care, this is really the glue that holds it all together. Chiropractic care directly affects the health and function of the nervous system, and it’s been proven that our nervous system is really the system that’s responsible for recovery.
Can you discuss why it’s important to prevent or avoid sports injuries from a chiropractic standpoint?
Dr. Scott Gardner: You really can’t achieve peak athletic performance if you’re injured. Chiropractic care can help you keep your body in optimal condition, reducing the risk of sports injuries. The chiropractic adjustments directly contribute to better spinal alignment and overall improved athletic performance.
