Chiropractic Care Following a Car Accident

People involved in a car accident should be checked by a chiropractor to make sure there was no damage to their spinal alignment. Chiropractors can also check for and treat minor injuries like whiplash even if symptoms are not felt right away.

Even if there are no obvious injuries, what are some symptoms that should never be ignored after a car accident?

Dr. Ben Rauch: Car accidents can be serious even when there are no obvious injuries. Accidents as slow as six to eight miles per hour can actually cause whiplash injuries. The effects or the symptoms of that whiplash do not always present themselves immediately. So even if you have no symptoms, you should make sure that you’re getting checked after an accident.

Could you please explain how chiropractors help people involved in auto accidents even after they’ve been treated by medical doctors for their injury?

Dr. Ben Rauch: Chiropractors will address the patients who have been in the accident by making sure their spines are in proper alignment, and then their nervous systems are also functioning normally. A patient will have a consultation, exam, x-rays if needed, all to see if those subluxations are in the patient’s spine. Once analyzed, a customized care plan will be laid out for the patient so that we can correct those subluxations.

What is involved in a typical chiropractic treatment plan for someone suffering whiplash or other common minor auto accident injuries?

Dr. Ben Rauch: Chiropractic treatment plans are customized to each individual who presents to the office. The first step is always seeing if the patient is a good candidate for chiropractic care. If suffering from a whiplash injury or other injuries due to an accident, we have to determine if that subluxation is the root cause of why they’re having these dysfunctions.

Can chiropractors help patients with aches and pains associated with old auto accident injuries that were previously untreated?

Dr. Ben Rauch: Yes, aches and pains are often found in the body. It’s the way of the body telling you something’s wrong, sort of like a check engine light in a car. Chiropractors are going to look for that root cause of these aches and pains. If the subluxation caused by the accident is that root cause, then the chiropractor can absolutely help by restoring that function and getting better function in that nervous system.
