Chiropractic and Pregnancy

Many women seek chiropractic care during pregnancy because it is a safe and effective way to relieve pressure and pain caused by the additional weight they are carrying. Chiropractic care also helps keep the baby in the proper position for birth.

Why would a pregnant woman need chiropractic care?

Dr. Scott Gardner: Well, as the baby starts to get bigger and bigger, the tendency of the mom is going to be to lean back to counterbalance that increase in weight in the abdominal and pelvic area. When that happens that is going to create too much curve in the lower back, which will cause a lot of pain.

How safe are chiropractic treatments for mom and for the baby?

Dr. Scott Gardner: Chiropractic care is already safe for the mom and the baby. We get a lot of direct referrals from obstetricians and midwives. Again, if it was not safe they definitely would not be referring to us.

Can chiropractic care help with the positioning of the baby during pregnancy?

Dr. Scott Gardner: Yes. There is a specific chiropractic technique called the Webster technique, which can passively help a baby that is in a breech position right themselves. I’ve also found that when someone is under care during the entire pregnancy, we rarely run into a situation where the baby is breeched. The baby tends to stay in a really neutral position, which will create much less stress on the mom and the baby.

Can receiving chiropractic care during pregnancy help make the mother more comfortable during delivery, and decrease the overall delivery time?

Dr. Scott Gardner: I don’t think I can give a definitive answer on that, but what I can tell you is that getting adjusted during pregnancy will allow for the smoothest overall experience for the mom, and definitely the speediest recovery time from the delivery process itself.
