Digital Posture Assessment – A Chiropractic Tool to Improve Your Posture

A digital posture assessment is a unique chiropractic tool used to detect posture issues. In today’s tech world, correcting posture is essential for long-term spinal health.

Could you please describe what a digital posture assessment is and what equipment is used to perform it?

Dr. Scott Gardner: We take a photo of the individual standing from the front and from the side. We use a program that measures the person’s posture in relation to ideal posture. This produces a printout that clearly identifies healthy areas and also problem areas.

What posture issues does the digital assessment help to reveal?

Dr. Scott Gardner: The posture assessment shows tilts, lateral translations and shifts of the head, shoulders, and pelvis in both the front view and the side view.

In what ways has the use of the digital posture screening helped improve your patient care and treatment outcomes?

Dr. Scott Gardner: It gives us a black and white starting point so we can repeat the test to measure progress and also learn what is working for the person, and what techniques we need to change or what maybe we need to add in for them to do as part of their posture-building exercises at home.

What are the most common posture issues you treat in your practice?

Dr. Scott Gardner: The most common posture issues we see are directly related to forward head posture. Really with the overuse of technology for most people, the neck begins to straighten from all the looking down at the devices. As the neck straightens and the head goes forward, the shoulders will also begin to round leading to a rounding in the upper back as well.

Do you recommend that younger people, especially those hunched over their devices, which you just mentioned, come in for a posture analysis to identify any issues before they become long-term problems?

Dr. Scott Gardner: Yes. Really the key to most things is early detection. Prevention is the key. Overuse of technology is happening with young children and teens, probably even more than with adults, so we recommend getting checked as early as possible. And the nice thing about the digital posture tool is, number one, it is very accurate, and number two, there’s no exposure to radiation like with X-ray.
